A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue

While the founding of a Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue may be recent history, the story of this volunteer organization goes back a few years when the Co-Founder and President, Peter J. Torres, along with other volunteers started the 501 (c) 3 group Animal Rescue Force of South Florida (ARF).  The transition from one group to another occurred in 2007 when volunteers noted the dire shortage of homes for recent or expectant mother cats and dogs and their offspring.  Identifying that the shelter resources could not provide the care necessary to raise puppies and kittens until ready for adoption Peter along with Donald Wulff, Kathy McNeil and Terry Collins struck out on their own to form A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue, Inc.

A Second Chance Rescue follows Peter’s successful track record at ARF combining a no-nonsense goal of saving animals lives with the blood, sweat and tears of countless volunteers, and financial supports from various donors (individuals and corporations alike).  In its second year the group is growing rapidly and has established relationships with various pet stores in Palm Beach County (including PetSmart, Wet Kisses Pet Company and Petco) and is now making efforts to expand into Broward County as well.

The group’s knowledge base is steeped with both common sense and research driven processes.  A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue, Inc. limits who is allowed to adopt or foster understanding that in order to break the homeless animal cycle a good match must be made.  To assure a healthy adoption process random home inspections and follow up contact are a part of every adoption.  Though time consuming in human hours these steps help many rescued pets find their right forever family.

A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue, Inc. is strictly volunteer based.  All of the grant writing, fostering, medical treatments, fundraising, baths and bottle feedings are done by generous people who seek only to help save the lives of pets.  These volunteers assist with completing the aforementioned adoption process as well as helping to condition pets to living in a home environment versus a shelter including potty and leash training when necessary.  Opening their hearts isn’t enough so many volunteers open their doors which allows the group to function as one of the largest no-kill rescue groups without a shelter.

Rescuing and arranging adoptions into loving homes for over 150 animals and successfully treating over a dozen heartworm positive mothers, are monumental tasks that have not gone unnoticed by the local media.  The Palm Beach Post, Wellington Cryer and The Observer, have all written articles promoting the group and the goal of finding homes for homeless pets.

With the clear goal of saving homeless pets’ lives by providing themwith a safe, healthy, foster environment and finding them a forever loving family, the next step is seeking funding to pay for the food and medical needs of the rescued animals.  Specifically the funds go directly to covering overhead cost (copying of legal forms, webpage hosting, etc.) food, vet expenses, as well as medical supplies. As an ALL volunteer 501 (c) 3 animal rescue group, the group relies solely on donations.  We hope that everyone becomes a part of our efforts to save the homeless animals — Spay /neuter your pet!

Our Mission:
Devoted to saving pregnant and nursing dogs, cats and their offspring, keeping them in a safe, healthy, foster environment and finding them forever loving family.

The Process:
Our rescues are cared for in foster homes until they are vet checked, able to be spayed /neutered, microchipped and current on all vaccines. Once a clean bill of health is given, then the adoption process begins.

Adopting:
Every potential adopter regardless of age, sex, race, creed or religion will be required to fill out an application. All applications will be reviewed by an experienced Adoption Counselor to determine if the best interests of the animal are met. Once the ideal adopter is found, he/she will be given the opportunity to become a part of the animal's life.
